‘Did you know, Yoga was developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago.’
‘Did you also know that the word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, which means to ‘join’ or ‘to unite’.
In Year 5 this term, we have been exploring different factors that relate to our health in our Integrated Studies topic, ‘Healthy Mind, Healthy Life’. We have looked at the 3 main elements of health including physical, social and emotional, and the impacts these have on our everyday life. The Year 5s found that yoga and mindfulness activities are a positive influence to make sure that our minds are healthy and ready to take on each day as its own adventure.
Today, we had the opportunity to participate in our in-house activity called ‘Yes 2 Yoga’. It taught us a variety of different yoga positions that were all based around plant and animals found in somebodies garden. This included; the dog, snake, lizard, sunflower, flower and sunset. We played a range of games that included these different yoga positions, which not only made us think, but we also needed a lot of concentration and balance. Towards the end of the activity, we learnt more about relaxation and different techniques that we could use to relax in a range of everyday situations. Visualising and relaxing helped us with our creative thoughts, while maintaining a healthy mind. In Year 5, we say YES 2 YOGA!
